Paper Heart, Indie Movies,Hipsters and Twee

Look I’m all for being ‘independent” or “marching to your own drummer”..but I can’t be the only annoyed or tired of this faux-indie bull that Hollywood keeps making. I don’t know when it exactly started , but movies like Juno just annoy the piss out of me. “indie” movies basically have the same formula. They appear to be not as crisp or flashy as big budget movies. They always take place in some quirky place. That usually isn’t a big city. Their soundtracks normally includes music that sounds like Belle and Sebastian, music that people consider to be “Lo-Fi”. Older music usually featured in these movies is music that is considered “hip” to listen and kids wearing horn-rimmed glasses and converse normally would have this playing on their iPod.
It’s these entitled hipster kids that think they are unique for their problems or that they are so smart because they read Hemmingway or Nietzsche
I recently saw a trailer for the movie “Paper Heart” staring Michael Cera as get this an socially awkward, nerdy , naive young man.; oh wait Cera is actually playing himself in the movie. Charlyne Yi plays herself in the movie as well, and it’s all about how she doesn’t believe in love. The director Jake M. Johnson is being played by Nicholas Jasenovec. The entire thing just feels so forced. It has this irritating hipster preciousness feel just from the trailer. All the interviews I have watched online feel so awkward. Even as Charyne talks to the people she’s interviewing she feels as if she is trying to hard to be “twee” and arty. Demetri Martin has a scene that was cut. She asks him what is she doing wrong? He responds “One style, two presence, three voice, four posture, five attitude” She responds rather defensivly, when in all reality she has no right to. She asked him, and honestly he’s spot on. He then adds “six defensiveness”.
What of Paper heart is real? What is scripted? I’m not sure.
What I do know is I will not be seeing it. My keffiyeh is dirty and I have to return my copy of Perks of Being a Wallflower to the library.

  1. I'm not a fan of indie movies either. And Michael Cera is the SAME in all his lil' movies! He's always the dorky awkward kid! And it is hipstery! Amen Sista! I did see Juno. It was funny. And I saw Nick and Norah's playlist too (I was bored). Not as funny.
